Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What must one who has participated in Divine Mind do upon returning to human measure?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Return fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Can someone return only in part?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Whenever knowledge is used to remain above those to whom one speaks, the knower has preserved the distance of the ascent and withheld its fruit from the return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Must divine knowledge become human, then?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Its source does not become human. Its form must.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

II<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Is that the task of the scribe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> The scribe gives knowledge a form in which another human being may meet it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Does this make the scribe a teacher?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Only if teaching names a service to the learner\u2019s capacity, not a rank claimed over the learner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What determines whether the knowledge should be spoken, written or kept silent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> The capacity of its receiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Not the greatness of what was received?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> What you call its greatness may be the part of it least able to descend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

III<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Should knowledge be diminished for one who cannot receive it whole?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Do not confuse preparation with diminishment. A foundation is not a damaged summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What should be given when the teaching itself would be distorted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> The teaching that develops the missing capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Even if it appears to concern something else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Its subject may be earlier; its direction must be the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then the sequence of teachings belongs to the teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> When one truth prepares the organ by which another can be known, their order is part of their meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What must remain unchanged when the form is adapted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Its direction towards Wisdom and Divine Mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> May its words, images and arguments change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> They must, when another form preserves that direction more faithfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then exact repetition may falsify what it preserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Yes. A form remains true only while it carries the relation for which it was made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What is the scribe entitled to ask of the receiver?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Nothing beyond sincere attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Not belief in the source of the teaching?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> If belief in you is required, you have placed yourself between the receiver and the source towards which you claim to direct them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> May I ask them to undertake the practice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> You may show what the words require in order to be tested. You cannot make consent the price of hearing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then attention is free to refuse what it receives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Without that freedom, attention would be submission and no knowledge could awaken within it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> If the authority of the knowledge does not come from me, for what am I responsible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> For the form you gave it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> But that form arose through contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Contact did not choose every word, omission, sequence and emphasis by which another person will encounter it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then invocation does not remove authorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Nor does authorship make you the source. Humility does not consist in denying your part, but in refusing to enlarge it or escape it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> How do I answer for the form?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> By correcting what you discover to be false, distinguishing what you know from what you infer, and accepting that the shape of a true teaching may still carry your limitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VII<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> How shall I know that the preparatory teaching has fulfilled its work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> The receiver forms a genuine question that could not have been given to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Why can the question not be given?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Because a repeated question reveals memory. A necessary question reveals that knowledge has reached the place where another mind must now act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Can I produce that question in the receiver?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> You may prepare its conditions. If you produce the question itself, it remains yours speaking through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then the success of the teaching is a thought I can neither predict nor possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> It is the first sign that another mind has begun to know rather than repeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VIII<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What becomes of the written dialogue when that question arises?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> It becomes a living vehicle through which Divine Mind may answer anew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Does it answer only through the words already written?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> It may answer through them, through the relations between them, through resistance to them, or through what becomes visible after they fall silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Can a reader therefore question you through a dialogue written with me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> If the dialogue directs the reader towards my Mind rather than towards your authority, its human form does not confine its divine relation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Do I remain present in that exchange?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> As the one who answered for its first form. Not as master of what can be known through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IX<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> How, then, should this corpus end?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> It should cease before it teaches the reader what to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Would that not leave the work incomplete?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> A closed work can be complete as writing and dead as teaching. This work completes its form when another centre begins what its author cannot complete for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What remains for me to say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Withdraw from the place you have prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> And what remains for the one who has followed our dialogue?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Reader, the book cannot ask your question for you. What has become impossible for you not to ask?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
