Thoth, to Andr\u00e9<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

I<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> When the physical body dies, what first preserves the human being\u2019s continuity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> The mental and astral bodies preserve the person\u2019s organised nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then physical death does not immediately remove personality and memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Their manner of expression changes because the physical body no longer supplies its functions, conditions and limits. The organisation carried by the subtler bodies does not vanish merely because one vehicle has separated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Is the being after death therefore identical to the person before it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Continuous is not the same as unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

II<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What belongs to the organised nature preserved by the mental and astral bodies?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> The relations among thought, desire, memory, character and the particular centre that lived through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Does every part of that organisation endure equally?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Each part continues according to the body capable of carrying it. When a vehicle changes or dissolves, what depended upon it cannot remain in the same form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then death is not one separation only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> It is better understood as the successive alteration of the relations through which a being had appeared as one human personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

III<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> If the astral body later separates or dissolves, what remains of the person?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Only what the person integrated into the mental or spiritual principle survives that dissolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What do you mean by integration?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> An experience is integrated when it has become knowledge, quality or capacity of the being, rather than remaining only an event held in memory or emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then merely undergoing an experience does not make it permanent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Duration during life is not the measure of what can pass beyond the body that carried it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> If personality and biography are gradually altered, what makes the surviving principle the same being?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Divine Mind preserves the person\u2019s particular point even after the temporary bodies dissolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Is identity therefore independent of memory?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Identity can continue where a former memory is no longer possessed. Memory tells the centre what it has experienced in a given form; it does not create the particularity of the centre itself. Recognition is one power of continuity, not continuity\u2019s sole cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What becomes of a memory that is no longer possessed by the person?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> It remains in Akasha, Divine Mind at the threshold of manifestation, as a record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Does the existence of that record mean the person still remembers it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> You have confused preservation with possession. A record may remain available when the centre from which it arose no longer carries it as present memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> If I encounter such a record, have I encountered the person?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> You have encountered something true of the person. Whether the person is present depends on how you are processing time and space, in presence and absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Can what is no longer remembered still act upon the surviving principle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> It may continue as a causal trace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> How can a cause act without being remembered?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Conscious recollection is not required for a cause to have shaped a capacity, tendency or limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then forgotten experience may remain active without remaining visible to the one it affects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> As it may during physical life. Death does not create that distinction; it makes its extent more evident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VII<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What survives when the essential knowledge of an experience is integrated but its images and circumstances disappear?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> The being retains what it became capable of knowing or doing through the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> But not necessarily the scene in which it was learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> The circumstance was the vehicle of learning. The integrated quality is its continuation in the learner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Is this why two beings may carry similar knowledge without sharing the same memory?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Knowledge reveals what has been integrated. Memory reveals the path by which one centre came to possess it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VIII<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What of the influence a person leaves in other lives, works and places?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Influence may survive every personal vehicle that produced it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Is that influence part of the person\u2019s survival?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> It is continuity of effect, not by itself continuity of the subject. A work may carry the measure of its maker without containing the maker\u2019s awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> Then memory held by others, an Akashic record and a surviving centre are not the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> To name them all immortality would conceal the question you wished to answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IX<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> What, then, may properly be said to survive?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> The particular point preserved in Divine Mind; whatever knowledge or quality has been integrated beyond dissolving vehicles; the causal traces that continue to shape it; records preserved in Akasha; and effects that remain in other beings and forms. These do not all belong to the person in the same way and should not be gathered under one careless name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

X<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> If dissolution belongs to lawful order, should every loss within it be called good?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> Lawfulness does not make loss painless, nor does it decide its moral meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9:<\/strong> How, then, can an intelligible Divine Order contain error, suffering and what we call evil?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoth:<\/strong> First distinguish limitation, error, conflict, suffering and evil. You will understand none of them while using one word to excuse the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
