That does not make you the author of every cause within the field.

III

André: If a consequence has already been set in motion, is its final form inevitable?

Thoth: A cause establishes a real direction. It does not therefore act alone.

André: May another cause alter what follows?

Thoth: Yes. A new cause may strengthen, divert, limit or transform the unfolding consequence. It cannot make the first cause never to have occurred.

André: Are some consequences beyond alteration?

Thoth: Some conditions cannot be recalled once manifested. Freedom then acts in the response and in the causes that proceed from it.

IV

André: Is choosing my response the first freedom?

Thoth: It is freedom where the condition cannot be changed.

André: Does this reduce freedom to an inward attitude?

Thoth: A response includes thought, consent, refusal and outward act.
