Does the mind invent that measure when it constructs the Word?

Thoth: The mind may invent a structure. It cannot make the invented structure true by invention alone.

André: Where does true measure exist before I formulate it?

Thoth: In Divine Mind, in whose order things participate.

André: Can I know it by looking only within myself?

Thoth: No. Its source is not the human knower, but its discovery occurs when your mind enters a true relation with what the thing reveals. The thing does not contain the order by itself; it manifests according to it.

André: Then neither introspection nor observation is sufficient alone.

Thoth: One without the other easily mistakes the condition of the knower for the law of the known.

II

André: What becomes of measure when it appears as number?

Thoth: Unity differentiates without losing its order.

André: Is number, then, prior to counting?

Thoth: Counting begins after distinctions have been made. Number is first the ordered manner in which distinction is possible.

André: Does the One become less one when number proceeds from it?

Thoth: If unity were broken by differentiation, number would record a ruin, not an order.

III

André: Yet the numbers I use are signs made by human beings.

Thoth: The sign is human. The relation it may express is not therefore human in origin.

André: How do I distinguish the number from its sign?

Thoth: Different signs may preserve the same relation. Number belongs to the order made thinkable; the numeral belongs to the means by which you think it.

André: Then a numerical formula can be exact without being the reality it expresses.

Thoth: No sign becomes its source by representing it accurately.

IV

André: Is measure only numerical relation?

Thoth: Quantity is one form of measure. Limit, proportion, interval and correspondence also reveal how a being stands within an order.

André: What is common to them?

Thoth: Each distinguishes what belongs to a relation from what would alter or destroy it.

André: Then to measure a thing is not merely to compare it with a unit.

Thoth: It is to know the relations through which it can be what it is.

V

André: When does such a relation become law?

Thoth: When Divine Mind sustains it as a condition under which manifestation is possible.

André: Is law therefore a command given to things?

Thoth: A command may be obeyed or disobeyed while the one commanded remains what it was. If a condition of manifestation is removed, the manifestation itself changes or ceases.

André: Then law is not primarily a punishment for transgression.

Thoth: Punishment concerns judgment. It determines what an event must preserve in order to belong to that order. It need not select the event from all that the order allows.

André: Then necessity and possibility both arise from measure.

Thoth: Necessity preserves the law. Repetition establishes a pattern; it does not by itself reveal the source of the pattern.

André: Then correspondence is not yet law.

Thoth: Not until you know the relation that makes the correspondence necessary or possible.

IX

André: Law is sustained in Divine Mind, yet manifestations within it arise, change and cease. How does an unchanging measure govern what moves?

Thoth: It does not govern change by preventing it.

André: What does it give to change?

Thoth: An order in which its possibilities may unfold.

André: Is this order what we call time?

Thoth: Time begins where change becomes an ordered procession rather than mere succession.

← Dialogue VIII · Complete contents · Dialogue X →

BOOK III — THE ORDER OF THE WORLD Thoth, to André I André: You have said that the structure of an operative Word fixes its measure.
