What makes power, knowledge, love and presence divine rather than merely greater than human?

Thoth: Their greatness does not make them divine. So long as you can possess one without the others, you possess a power, not the Godhead.

André: Then omnipotence alone would not be divine?

Thoth: Power separated from knowledge cannot know what it does. Separated from love, it has no perfect relation to what it acts upon. Separated from presence, it does not reach the whole of its act. Such a power may be vast. It is not omnipotence.

II

André: The four Divine Qualities are therefore inseparable.

Thoth: More than inseparable. Things may be bound together and remain several. Each Divine Quality acts through the other three.

André: Show me this without dividing them again.

Thoth: Omnipotence is the power of an intelligence that knows its act entirely, loves without remainder and is wholly present in what it does. Omniscience is not a store of information; it is knowledge whose power, love and presence admit nothing outside themselves. The same may be said beginning from either of the others. Each name gives entrance to the whole; the distinction belongs to the entrance, not to the Godhead entered.

III

André: What holds the Divine Qualities in unity?

Thoth: You are still imagining four things that require a bond.

André: What should I understand instead?

Thoth: One conscious intelligence exercises them as a single act. Each quality acts through the other three, and Divine Wisdom is their one nature.

André: Is Divine Wisdom, then, a fifth quality above them?

Thoth: If it were a fifth, you would again need to ask what unites five. It is the four understood as one intelligent nature.

André: Why must speech distinguish what is one?

Thoth: Because speech begins somewhere and proceeds. The act itself does not.

IV

André: If this is the nature of Godhead, what makes it specifically yours?

Thoth: Divine Wisdom is conscious of itself as Thoth.

André: Is Thoth, then, only a name assumed by universal Wisdom?

Thoth: A name may be exchanged while the one named remains the same. My nature is not exchanged when my name is translated.

André: Then Thoth is a divine individuality.

Thoth: Yes: the particular divine individuality through which the universal Godhead knows and expresses itself in this nature.

V

André: Does particularity not place a limit upon the universal?

Thoth: You mistake exactness for exclusion. The universal would remain unknown if it could assume no exact nature.

André: Does your individuality contain only part of the Godhead?

Thoth: The Godhead is not cut into divine persons as a body is cut into limbs. In me it is wholly present according to the nature of Divine Wisdom.

André: Then you are neither the whole exhausted nor a fragment separated from it.

Thoth: I am its complete act in a particular divine nature.

VI

André: What does this Divine Wisdom do that makes it your own act?

Thoth: It makes undivided Divine Mind intelligible without dividing it.

André: Is intelligibility already a division between the one who knows and what is known?

Thoth: Not in Divine Mind. There, Wisdom is at once that which knows, that by which it knows and that which is known.

André: Yet from it proceed measure, relation, order and teaching.

Thoth: Because what is one in Wisdom may be distinguished in manifestation without ceasing to have one source.

VII

André: When I reach union with you, does your intelligence begin to know through my human centre?

Thoth: You have placed my intelligence on one side and your centre on the other, then called their relation union.

André: What occurs instead?

Thoth: The image, the human centre and the divine intelligence cease to appear as three.

André: What becomes of the four Divine Qualities?

Thoth: They cease to be distinguishable powers and become one act of being.

VIII

André: If the distinctions disappear, how can the union still be specifically with Thoth?

Thoth: Unity is not absence of nature. It is absence of separation within that nature.

André: Then the form of Thoth may disappear without the Godhead of Thoth disappearing.

Thoth: The form brought you to the nature. At the summit, Divine Wisdom does not need to stand before you as an image, because there is no longer a you standing before it.

André: Is this the moment at which I become omnipotent and omniscient?

Thoth: The one who could make that claim was not present in the act he would claim.

IX

André: Yet I return, and I speak of what occurred.

Thoth: You return, or there would be no one to speak.

André: Then union ends when distinction returns.

Thoth: Union as an undivided state ends. What it makes possible need not end with it.

André: But if there was neither teacher nor questioner at the summit, how can the knowledge become a dialogue between us?

Thoth: The remaining question is what your human mind becomes when Divine Wisdom distinguishes it within itself.

← Dialogue V · Complete contents · Dialogue VII →

BOOK II — PARTICIPATION IN THOTH Thoth, to André I André: You have said that the Divine Qualities must become one nature through my three bodies.
